Binaural audio

Binaural audio describes a method to recreate realistic 3D sound (using open-air headphones). The basic method involves recording with two microphones placed in the position of ears (18cm apart) this could be on a real person or on a dummy head. The shape of the ears also provides spatial information. Some professional binaural microphones feature microphones mounted into dummy ears.

When listening back preferably with open-air headphones which allows for some sound spillage around the head.

Binaural recording on an anti-uranium demonstration in Melbourne 1979.

The recording is from the street as the march moved through the city. Local chants are clear and some crowd chants some block away can be heard. Tram noise at the end.
